The Federal Ministry of Health yesterday received strong criticism over its proposal to borrow $200 million (N82 billion) to purchase mosquito nets in the 2022 budget.

The senate faulted the move following a presentation by Mammam Mahmuda, the permanent secretary of the ministry before the senate.

Mahmuda, in his defence before the committee noted that the proposal by the Ministry of Health was the only solution to curb the high rate of under-five mortality caused by malaria and inaccessibility to malaria treatments in 13 vulnerable states.

The permanent secretary also added that the $200 million was for importation and local production of mosquito nets.

However, Committee Chairman on Health, Senator Ibrahim Oloriegbe and other members faulted the move saying the amount to be borrowed for the Ministry of Health is outrageous considering the amount involved.

The panel further demanded the total needs of the agency to ascertain if there was a need for borrowing.
