The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has banned the importation of Indomie noodles into Nigeria due to allegations of a cancer-causing ingredient detected in the noodles and the agency’s non-registration.

Malaysian and Taiwanese health regulators have discovered ethylene oxide, a chemical found in Indomie’s “special chicken” flavor noodles.

NAFDAC’s food safety and applied nutrition directorate will randomly sample Indomie noodles (including seasoning) from production facilities, while the post marketing surveillance directorate will sample from markets, she explained.

Because the compound of interest is ethylene oxide, the director of food lab services has been contacted. He is focusing on the analysis methodology.

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has nally alidated the safety of Indomie and other noodle brands in Nigeria.

Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, Director General, disclosed on Thursday that the Agency gathered samples of noodles and seasonings (spices) from various sites for laboratory investigation, and the results were found to be safe for human consumption.

According to her, NAFDAC did not prohibit the importation of Indomie during the recent Taiwan-Malaysia incident that resulted in multiple deaths.

She did, however, point out that prior to her appointment as DG The Federal Government prohibited Noodles in general, but this was done to safeguard local manufacturers.

She noted, however, that because the implicated international noodles are not in Nigeria, the locally produced noodles are safe for human consumption, and she added, “We are improving on what will make our people healthier.” Whatever we put in our meals will have an effect on us, whether positive or negative.”
