NDLEA senior officials held a two-day meeting with the Directorate of Priority Crime Investigation, popularly known as HAWKS, to forge stronger operational ties to combat drug trafficking in both countries.
General Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), represented by the Agency’s Secretary, Mr. Shadrach Haruna, stated that the deliberation, which is a follow-up to a virtual one held in April 2022, will “bridge the gap and rekindle our efforts by deepening collaboration in line with the principle of common and shared responsibility in tackling the global drug problem.

While highlighting the increasing sophistication of drug trafficking cartels, particularly the proliferation of methamphetamine laboratories and the emergence of fentanyl production facilities, which pose grave threats to the safety and well-being of citizens in both countries.
Marwa stated that swift action is required through the seamless exchange of intelligence and technical expertise.
Another intended objective of this visit is the establishment of an agreed system to remove and disrupt significant drug trafficking syndicates operating between the two jurisdictions,” Marwa remarked.

In his response, the South African delegation’s commander, Lt. Gen. Senaba Mosipi, emphasised the importance of partnership between the two countries.
He further stated that because drug traffickers know no borders or geographical boundaries, the NDLEA and HAWKS must take this operation seriously.
