Niger Soldier troops have declared their intention to depose President Mohamed Bazoum, who has been detained since the early hours of Wednesday.

In the early hours of Thursday, the soldiers proclaimed the coup on television.

In the broadcast, ten senior officers commanded by Colonel Major Amadou Abdramane stated that the National Council of the Nation’s State Guard had resolved to “put an end to the regime you are familiar with.”

They claimed to have seized control as a result of deteriorating security and poor social and economic administration.

“We reaffirm our support for all Niger commitments,” the soldiers declared.

They had already cordoned off Bazoum’s office and apartment with military vehicles.

Crowds had gathered in support of the president in the streets of Niamey, the capital city, but military fired rounds to disperse them.

Talon left after meeting with ECOWAS Chairman President Bola Tinubu in Abuja.

Tinubu had previously decried the incident, saying that the regional body, as well as the world community, would not tolerate a breach of constitutional order inside the sub-region.
