On Thursday, just after finishing anchoring his morning show on Ozisa FM, Owerri, Uba was approached by highly armed masked individuals on the premises of Assumpta Cathedral of the Owerri Catholic Archdiocese.
When the attackers double-crossed him in front of Holy Ghost College Secondary School, he was driving in his SUV.
The journalist is a vocal opponent of Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma’s administration, notably about the state’s insecurity.
According to eyewitnesses, the shooters drove a Hilux, a Lexus 350, and another vehicle identified as an ES 330.
According to the source, the gunmen forced the activist, who is also the coordinator of the human rights organisation ‘Protect the Weak International Foundation (PROWIF),’ into one of their vehicles and sped away.
People went to assist him but were scared away by the attackers, thus his vehicle was abandoned at the spot.
“Unknown people armed with AK-47 rifles have abducted my colleague, Theodore Chinonso Uba, NonsoNkwa of Ozisa 96.1FM, Owerri,” the source added.
On his way out of work this morning, he stopped in front of the Maria Assumpta Cathedral in Owerri.
“Eyewitnesses said they looked like police or DSS as they blocked him off with not less than two vehicles at the entrance to the cathedral.”
