OpenAI has recently introduced a new feature called “custom instructions” for users of its widespread ChatGPT.
This feature aims to streamline interactions with the chatbot by allowing users to set specific instruction prompts.

This will eliminate the need to repeat the same instructions each time they engage with the bot.
Rather than typing instructions like “Write the answer under 1,000 words” or “Keep the tone of response formal,” users can now share any context or preferences they want ChatGPT to consider in its responses.
This customization feature has diverse applications.
For instance, a teacher can specify that they are teaching fourth-grade math, while a developer can request suggestions in a particular coding language.
Additionally, users can specify details like family size, enabling ChatGPT to provide tailored responses related to meals, grocery shopping, or vacation planning.
Although users could previously provide such instructions during interactions, the custom instructions make it easier to set the same context repeatedly.
This feature is also compatible with plugins, allowing users to receive location-based recommendations for restaurants or flights.
OpenAI has introduced this feature as a beta for Plus plan users, but it is not accessible for individuals in the EU and the UK at present.
To try out custom instructions, users can access the feature on the web by navigating to Settings > Beta features > Opt into Custom instructions.
On iOS, the option is available through Settings > New Features > Turn on Custom Instructions.
Notably, the information users provide for custom responses will also be utilized to train OpenAI’s API models, helping them adapt to various instructions without overdoing it.
Users do have the option to opt out of this setting through their data control preferences.
OpenAI has been testing custom instructions with some users, offering two boxes to specify chat preferences and preferred chatbot responses.
The changes take effect in the next session after users input their preferences. The character limit for custom instructions is set at 1,500 characters.
To ensure user safety, OpenAI uses its moderation API to scan customized instructions for any unsafe content.
If instructions lead to harmful or hateful responses, ChatGPT can refuse to save or ignore them, adhering to the company’s policies.
