According to Isamu Yamane, a deputy administrator in the Transport Ministry, a Thai Airways International plane bound for Bangkok collided with a parked Eva Airways plane bound for Taipei at Haneda airport.
Yamane said the runway was momentarily stopped, following the incident but reopened approximately two hours later once it was cleared. Some planes were delayed, and the accident’s cause was still being investigated.
TBS TV News aired footage of the incident. The news aired footage of two commercial jets parked on the same airfield. On NHK TV, an official was seen picking up what appeared to be a piece of an airplane wing and removing it from the runway.
The airlines did not respond to numerous phone calls and were not immediately available for comment. According to images and media reports, a winglet on the Thai Airways plane seemed to be damaged. Winglets are vertical projections on the wing’s tip that minimize drag.
