President Bola Tinubu is now meeting with G5 Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leaders. The meeting began at 4 p.m. on Thursday at the presidential palace in Abuja.

Members of the G5 include Oyo state governor Seyi Makinde, former Rivers state governor Nyesom Wike, and Benue state governor Samuel Ortom. Others include former Abia and Enugu governors Okezie Ikpeazu and Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi. While the meeting’s specifics are unknown, it is possible that it is related to Tinubu’s cabinet formation consultations.

After Atiku Abubakar won the PDP’s presidential primary election in May 2022, the G5 — a sub-entity of the PDP’s Integrity Group — rose to prominence.

Prior to the election, the party stakeholders who formed the Integrity Group demanded that the presidential ticket be zoned to the south in accordance with the party’s constitution’s rotation mechanism.

Following Atiku’s primary election victory, the G5 demanded that the party’s national leader, Iyorchia Ayu, quit.

The group’s contention was that the presidential candidate and chairman could not be from the same region. But Ayu refused to leave, and as a result, the G5 members stayed away from the PDP presidential campaign.

When Ayu was suspended by his ward in March for alleged anti-party activity, Wike and his associates had their way. Following that, a federal high court disqualified him from serving as the party’s chairperson.

Makinde was the winner among the G5 members. Among the G5 members, Makinde was re-elected governor, while three others — Ortom, Ikpeazu, and Ugwuanyi – were unsuccessful in their attempts for senate seats.

Sim Fubara, Wike’s favored candidate for Rivers state governor, was elected. Tinubu stated after the presidential election in May that he could not have won without Wike’s assistance.

I went through a grueling campaign, fought hard, and was backed up by many of you, and I won. Just and square. “Thank you, Nyesom, for your contribution to my victory,” Tinubu stated.
