Queen Elizabeth was able to deliver a virtual first address since she was hospitalized two weeks ago for a reception at the United Nations climate conference, COP26, on Monday evening.

In the pre-recorded speech, Queen Elizabeth spoke often of her late husband, Prince Philip, and his efforts towards the environment.

Pointing at a comment the Duke of Edinburgh made about climate change in 1969, she said, “The impact of the environment on human progress was a subject close to the heart of my dear late husband.

“It is a source of great pride to me that the leading role my husband played in encouraging people to protect our fragile planet, lives on through the work of our eldest son Charles and his eldest son William.

“I could not be more proud of them.”

She went on to say that, “Indeed, I have drawn great comfort and inspiration from the relentless enthusiasm of people of all ages ― especially the young ― in calling for everyone to play their part.

“I, for one, hope that this conference will be one of those rare occasions where everyone will have the chance to rise above the politics of the moment and achieve true statesmanship.

“None of us underestimates the challenges ahead: but history has shown that when nations come together in common cause, there is always room for hope. Working side by side, we can solve the most insurmountable problems and triumph over the greatest of adversities.

Her decision not to travel was communicated by Buckingham Palace in a statement. “Her Majesty is disappointed not to attend the reception but will deliver an address to the assembled delegates via a recorded video message.

The 95-year-old will hopefully make her first public appearance on November 14 at the National Service of Remembrance after two weeks of rest as she would only be doing a virtual speech, for now, the palace said.
