Bayern Munich recommenced their Bundesliga title defense with a 2-0 win at Union Berlin, with Robert Lewandoski hitting the 40-goal mark in all competitions for a fifth straight season on his return from a knee injury.

Due to injuries, Robert Lewandoski had been away longer than the Bundesliga. But in a world where uncertainty surrounds us, there was still a certain inevitability that The Pole as he is fondly called would make the difference for Bayern Munich at Union Berlin.

The Bundesliga’s most prolific striker made no mistake with a penalty late in the first half, after Leon Goretzka was hacked down in the 39th minute by Neven Subotic. The penalty was calmly slotted to the bottom right corner of the goal post after a twitchy run-up.

Since scoring a relatively modest 25 goals in his debut season at Bayern Munich in 2014/2015, the Polish star has notched successive hauls of 42, 43, 41, 40 and Sunday’s spot-kick took him to another 40 from just 34 appearances, with the promise of more to come in the 2019/2020 season.

Robert Lewandowski is being tipped to challenge Gerd Muller’s record by scoring 40 league goals in a single Bundesliga season.  He currently has a tally of 26 league goals with eight games left to play in the Bundesliga this season.

Bayern Munich’s victory over Union Berlin on Sunday saw them reach the 50-goal mark under Hansi Flick in just 16 Bundesliga matches. This is a record quick time for reaching the milestone.

Flick took over from Niko Kovac in November last year and has seen an impressive improvement, earning himself a three-year contract in April.

Bayern Munich returns to the Allianz Arena next weekend when they host Eintracht Frankfurt.
