If early viewership estimates hold true, Squid Game will become Netflix’s most popular TV show ever.
Last month, the scary hyper-violent Korean series premiered on the platform, and it follows 456 desperate contestants as they compete in a secret and deadly survival game. The top reward in the various rounds of games is about £30 million.
The protagonists compete in a traditional children’s game called Red Light, Green Light, in which losing results in death.

Despite the violent images in the horror-thriller series making viewers queasy, it has become a global hit and has topped the charts as the number one show in several countries, including the United Kingdom and the United States.
Some fans have repeatedly asked if the dystopian show, which sheds light on staggering wealth inequalities, is in fact real. The Squid Game is said to be a terrifying version of Takeshi’s Castle.
Ted Sarandos, Netflix’s co-CEO, stated that the series will “certainly be their greatest non-English-language show in the world,” and that there is “a very high chance it will be their biggest show ever.”
If this holds true, the show will surpass Bridgerton, which is currently Netflix’s most popular original show. In its first 28 days on the service, Bridgerton had 82 million subscribers tuned in to watch at least two minutes of the show, with a total of 625 million hours viewed in the first four weeks.
