Grammy-nominated afrobeat musician Femi Kuti recently shared a personal account of the challenging times he faced following the deaths of his father, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, his sister Shola Kuti, and a cousin.
In an interview with media personality Chude Jideonwo, Femi Kuti revealed that there were grim predictions that 12 family members, including himself, would die in quick succession.

As the eldest son, he felt immense pressure to remain strong despite the overwhelming circumstances.
During this tumultuous period, Femi Kuti’s wife, Funke, decided to leave him, adding to the already mounting crisis. Many people believed that these circumstances would cause him to lose his sanity.
Femi Kuti shared, “Fela had just gone. My sister had gone. My cousin had gone. Some people were predicting that 12 of us would die. And I [wondered], is this prediction going to come true?
-We had our internal family problems. They would say, ‘You know, you are the first son; you must do it.’ And I would say, ‘Who put me in this complicated situation?’
-Then my wife left me. And they said, ‘Femi is going mad.’ It was an incredibly difficult period.”

Despite the challenges, Femi Kuti expressed gratitude for the experience, acknowledging that it played a significant role in shaping him into the person he is today.
The strength and resilience he displayed during that time allowed him to grow and overcome the obstacles that came his way.
