The fourth typhoon of the year, Talim, made landfall on the southern coast with gusts of almost 140km/h (87mph).

Storm surges battered the coast, as high winds and rain forced the cancellation of hundreds of flights and trains.

Vietnam said it was evacuating 30,000 people from Quang Ninh and Hai Phong, which were expected to be the hardest hit.

The China Meteorological Administration issued an orange alert, the second-highest warning level in a four-tier system, after Talim made ashore about 10:20 local time (14:20 GMT).

The typhoon might lose speed by Tuesday morning and “weaken and dissipate over northern Vietnam” on Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service, it added.

According to Chinese official media, among those evacuated in Guangdong were over 8,000 fish-farm workers who were carried onshore.

Hundreds of coastal tourist attractions have also been ordered closed by local authorities.
