Tinubu suspended the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Abdulrasheed Bawa, on Wednesday night and immediately replaced him.

According to the report, the suspension was announced in a statement by Willie Bassey, the Director of Information in the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF).

According to the statement, Bawa’s suspension is to allow for a thorough inquiry into his conduct while in office.

Following his suspension, Bawa has been asked to take over the EFCC’s affairs to the Director of Operations, who will oversee the anti-graft agency’s operations until the inquiry is completed.

The Acting Chairman of the EFCC, appointed by Tinubu is none other than Abba Mohammed Umar.

Mohammed Umar Abba is the EFCC’s Director of Operations and a Commissioner of Police (CP).

Following Ibrahim Magu’s suspension on July 6, 2020, Abba took over as Acting Chairman of the Commission on July 9, 2020.

Abba was born on June 22, 1965, in Tudunwada, Kano State, and received his first degree from Bayero University, Kano.

Abba completed his one-year national service with the former Anambra State Police Command before joining the Nigeria Police Force. He was commissioned in 1992 after attending the Nigeria Police Academy in Kaduna State.

In January 2016, Abba was seconded to the Commission to lead the Counterterrorism and General Investigations (CTGI) Section at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja.

He was appointed as the Commission’s Director of Operations in 2017, a post he held until 2020, when he took over as interim Chairman from Ibrahim Magu, a position he retained till he returned to the Police.

According to a statement from the SGF’s office, the suspension would allow for a comprehensive assessment of his behavior while in office as a result of severe allegations of abuse of authority leveled against him by various anti-corruption stakeholders.

Following his suspension, Bawa was directed to immediately take over his office’s business to the EFCC’s Director of Operations, Mohammed Umar Abba, who will oversee the Chairman’s office.
