The House of Representatives has approved the N500 billion requested by President Bola Tinubu for palliatives to alleviate the impact of the elimination of petroleum subsidies on Nigerians.
The House revised the 2022 Supplementary Appropriations Act on Thursday to accommodate the president’s request.
Mr Tinubu had asked the National Assembly in a letter on Wednesday to amend the 2022 Supplementary Appropriations Act to provide N500 billion for palliatives.
The lower chamber debated and approved the amended measure on Thursday. The details of the palliatives to be delivered were not included in the letter.
On Thursday, the Senate received a similar letter from Mr Tinubu, in which he requested authority to deduct N500 billion from the 2022 supplementary appropriation law to fund the provision of palliative care to Nigerians.
During plenary, Senate President Godswill Akpabio read the letter.
Former President Muhammadu Buhari proposed a supplementary budget of N819, 536, 927, 815 in 2022 for capital projects as a result of the floods’ damage on farmlands and road infrastructure.
The budget’s lifespan has already been extended to December 31.
In his letter to the Senate, Mr Tinubu stated that the elimination of the N500 billion to pay palliative care is “necessary.”
“I write to request Senate approval for the amendment of the 2022 supplementary appropriation act in accordance with the attached.”
“The request has become necessary, among other things, to source the funds required to provide palliatives to mitigate the effects of the recent removal of fuel subsidies on Nigerians.”
