Tope Alabi Advised By Ifa Priest To Conduct DNA Test

Renowned gospel musician Tope Alabi has been urged to undergo a Deoxyribo Nucleic Acid (DNA) test to confirm her ancestry, following her incorporation of a Yoruba traditional greeting, “Aboru aboye,” in one of her recent songs.

Oluwo Jogbodo Orunmila, an Ifa priest, emphasized the importance of Alabi conducting the DNA test to establish her roots.

In a viral music video, Alabi and her backup singers referred to themselves as “ebo,” which translates to “sacrifice.”

However, they clarified that they are “Aboru Aboye,” meaning they have been accepted as sacrifices by God.

Orunmila, the chief priest of Iledi Imule Agba in Oyan, Odo Otin North Local Council Development Authority in Osun State, expressed that Alabi has frequently incorporated traditionalists’ terminology in her work.

He pointed out her use of words like “Eledumare” and other praises typically reserved for Orunmila and Yoruba deities.

Orunmila stated, “All these words showed that Tope Alabi needs ancestry DNA to confirm that she belongs to the Ifa tradition.

Those words are forcing their way out; she only needs the right teachers to get fully on track.” He explained that Ifa represents ancestry, and there may come a time when a family member illustrates the doctrines of Ifa, intentionally or unintentionally, if a lineage known for practicing Ifa stops doing so.

Addressing the notion that Alabi is an idol worshipper, Orunmila asserted that such accusations are based on uninformed opinions, as Ifa only identifies those who willingly embrace it, while maintaining the discretion to identify with other religions.

He emphasized that the phrase “Aboru Aboye” is used by Ifa initiates and is accompanied by “ni Ile Ifa,” signifying acceptance of sacrifices within the Ifa community.

Explaining the origin of the word, Orunmila cited the story of three women—Aboru, Aboye, and Abosise—who provided significant assistance to Orunmila when he sought to consult Olodumare.

To show gratitude for their power and kindness, Orunmila mandated that anyone seeking to meet Iyanifa or Babalawo must first pay homage to Aboru, Aboye, and Abosise.
