Portuguese Champions Benfica, have vowed to help authorities find the perpetrators who stoned the team’s bus in an attack that left two players injured. The players, Andrija Zivkovic and Julian Weigl are currently in a medical facility receiving treatment.
The team’s bus was targeted as it went down a major motorway after Benfica’s match with Tondela at the Estadio da Luz ended in a goalless draw.
Benfica’s game with Tondela was the team’s first competitive game following the resumption of the Primeira Liga after the league had been suspended since March due to the outbreak of the Coronavirus pandemic.

While the game was in progress behind closed doors due to medical protocols aimed at curtailing the spread of the virus, fans had gathered in large numbers outside the stadium in Lisbon to support their team.
A statement released by Benfica following the attack read: “Benfica repudiates and regrets the criminal stoning the players’ bus had suffered when it was headed to their Seixal Training Center at the end of the game against Tondela in Lisbon on Thursday night.”

“We inform that as a matter of precaution, Julian Weigl and Andrija Zivkovic have been hospitalized after being hit by shrapnel.”
It went ahead to say that: “Benfica guarantees full collaboration with authorities to whom we appeal to bring to book every offender involved in the ugly incident.”
Benfica’s goalless draw with Tondela keeps the team on the same point with title contenders FC Porto who are on 60points after 25 games.
