The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) has announced the sudden death of the former Group Managing Director (GMD) Joseph Dawha who died after a brief illness. The sad news was confirmed in a statement by the current NNPC GMD Mele Kyari on Monday evening.
“The NNPC family gravely mourns the death of the former GMD, who he noted, provided astute leadership and made immense contributions to the progress of the corporation,” Kennie Obateru, the NNPC Group General Manager, Group Public Affairs division, quoted Kyari as he said.

Dawha who was the 16th Group Managing Director of the Corporation led the state-run oil company from August 1, 2014, to August 4, 2015, during former President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration. He previously served as the group executive director, exploration, and production of the corporation before he was appointed as GMD.
Additionally, he also served as the director of commercial services for Eleme Petrochemical Company Limited (currently called Indorama) Port Harcourt in 2003. Then in 2005, he was appointed as managing director of Integrated Data Services Limited, Benin.

The statement noted that Kyari expressed shock over the sudden passing of the Director. He further described his departure as a great loss not only to the NNPC family but the nation as a whole. Dawha’s death has robbed the country of a great and dedicated leader.
Dawha’s passing came about two months after Maikantu Baru, the immediate past NNPC GMD, died.
