The Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), Akwa-Ibom state chapter has directed its members to boycott a former minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode’s press conference in the state.

This came after the chapter slammed Fani-Kayode for verbally assaulting the Daily Trust newspaper journalist, Mr. Charles Eyo in a press conference on Thursday, August 20, 2020, in Calabar, Cross River State.

According to reports, the former minister intimidated and verbally attacked  Eyo by describing him ‘very stupid’ after querying who bankrolled his recent tour of some Southern states. It would be recalled that the NUJ condemned the former minister and said his threats to the reporter had exposed him as intolerant.

Consequently, he expressed regret and said he is withdrawing the word “stupid” which he used in his encounter with the journalist. Fani-Kayode said, “I have many friends in the media who I offended by losing my cool and using such words.

“I hereby express my regret for doing so. I would never seek to physically harm a journalist. For the last 30 years, I have defended and worked with journalists and fought for the right of freedom of expression.”

However, a statement released on Friday disclosed that the NUJ has asked journalists not to attend any activity organised by the former minister.
