The All Progressives Congress (APC) has finally congratulated Governor Godwin Obaseki for winning the Edo Governorship Election.
The Chairman of the Caretaker Committee of the party, Governor Mai Mala Buni said he considered the re-election of the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), as a victory for democracy. Obaseki beat the APC aspirant, Osagie Ize-Iyamu and 12 other contenders in the governorship race that took place on Sep 19 in the state.
Recall that the APC publicly rejected the election results and the governor’s victory in a statement on Monday, September 21, stating that some of the figures announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Sunday were fabricated.
The party also alleged that the results of the election were altered. However, Buni called on the APC leaders to acknowledge the election as free, fair and credible as already done by President Muhammadu Buhari.
“As a party, we join our leader, President Muhammadu Buhari GCFR, to affirm our ‘commitment to free and fair elections’ in order to strengthen the foundation for our political and moral authority.
“We commend the INEC, our security agencies and all political parties that contested the election for the successful conduct of the election. As a governing party, we will take every step necessary to support the Federal Government to consolidate all the gains achieved,” he said.
The APC chairman also added that “Let us unite to move our democracy for forward. We must put an end to the era when electoral contest become warfare. We urge our candidate and all our members to join us in congratulating Mr Godwin Obaseki and the PDP, being the declared winner of the election.”
The governor noted that the party must focus on Ondo where its candidate, incumbent Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, pursues a second term in office.
