Teams are required to give inexperienced drivers the opportunity to participate in two practice sessions during the season.
However, after 12 Grands Prix, no team has made any changes to their regular drivers.
Mercedes will break this trend by giving Formula 2 title contender Frederik Vesti his chance during the Mexico race.
While an official announcement is anticipated this week, Vesti expressed his excitement about the opportunity in a conversation with TV broadcaster Viaplay.
He mentioned how crazy it feels to drive in an official Formula 1 practice session alongside Lewis Hamilton, fulfilling a dream he has had for a long time.
Currently in the thick of the F2 title fight, Vesti is just 12 points behind the current standings leader, Theo Pourchaire.
However, a challenging Belgian Grand Prix weekend caused some setbacks for the Dane.
During extremely wet conditions, Vesti spun on the way to the grid, damaging his Prema car beyond repair, and he had to sit out the races and hope that his title rivals wouldn’t score too highly.
Unfortunately for Vesti, Pourchaire’s strong performance allowed him to secure a second-place finish, earning enough points to take the lead in the championship.
With Ayumu Iwasa between him and Jack Doohan, the latter now sits just 38 points behind Pourchaire in the title race.

As the season progresses with three rounds remaining, the title race in the F2 series remains open and highly competitive.
Nonetheless, Vesti’s opportunity to participate in the FP1 session at the Mexican Grand Prix marks an exciting milestone in his young racing career.
