The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), has announced that it will launch its next Moon lander mission, Chandrayaan-3, on July 14.

This mission comes nearly four years after the crash of the previous iteration in 2019.

The launch will take place at 2:35 pm IST from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, using the Launch Vehicle Mark-III.

The mission, which is codenamed LVM3-M4, will consist of a lander, propulsion module, and rover.

The objective is to land safely on the lunar surface, conduct scientific experiments, and rove across the Moon. The landing is expected to take place in August.

If successful, India will become the fourth country in the world to achieve a soft landing on the Moon, joining the ranks of the former Soviet Union, the United States, and China.

Originally announced in January 2020, the Chandrayaan-3 mission was initially planned for 2022.

ISRO has incorporated lessons learned from its previous Moon lander mission, which faced a setback when it failed minutes before landing in September 2019.

The space agency has integrated new technologies into the lander, including laser and RF-based altimeters, velocimeters, throttleable liquid engines, hazard detection and avoidance systems, and a landing leg mechanism.

ISRO has also equipped the rover with instruments such as a laser-induced breakdown spectroscope and an alpha particle X-ray spectrometer.

These instruments will enable qualitative and quantitative elemental analysis of the lunar soil and rocks at the landing site.

India has been making significant progress in its space exploration efforts in recent years.

The country has passed its space policy to facilitate collaboration between ISRO and space tech startups.

In addition to the Chandrayaan mission, ISRO is actively working on its highly-anticipated human space flight mission, Gaganyaan.

This mission aims to send three astronauts to a low-Earth orbit for a duration of three days and is scheduled for 2024.

Last month, India signed NASA’s Artemis Accords, signifying its collaboration with other participating countries in the Artemis program for space exploration.
