OpenAI has announced that developers with a history of successful payments will now have access to its latest language model, GPT-4.
This access is being granted beginning from Thursday afternoon, and the company plans to expand access to new developers by the end of the month.

Availability limits will then be gradually increased based on compute availability.
According to a blog post from OpenAI, the demand for GPT-4 has been high, with millions of developers requesting access since March.
Furthermore, it foresees a future where chat-based models can be applied to a wide range of use cases.
“Millions of developers have requested access to the GPT-4 API since March, and the range of innovative products leveraging GPT-4 is growing every day,” the post read.
“We envision a future where chat-based models can support any use case.”
GPT-4 offers improvements over its predecessor, GPT-3.5, including the ability to generate text and code while also accepting image and text inputs.
It performs at a “human level” on professional and academic benchmarks.
While GPT-4 has enhanced image understanding capabilities, this feature is currently being tested with one partner, Be My Eyes.
However, OpenAI has not provided a timeline for when it will be available to a wider customer base.
It is important to note that GPT-4, like other generative AI models, is not flawless. It can produce incorrect facts and reasoning errors, sometimes with confidence.
It also lacks the ability to learn from its experiences and struggles with challenging tasks, such as generating code that introduces security vulnerabilities.
In the future, OpenAI plans to allow developers to fine-tune GPT-3 and GPT-3.5 Turbo with their own data, similar to its other text-generating models.
This capability is expected to be available later this year. Additionally, OpenAI announced its plan to deprecate old models available through its API to optimize compute capacity.
Starting from January 4, 2024, older models like GPT-3 and its derivatives will be replaced with new “base GPT-3” models that are more compute efficient.
Developers using the old models will need to manually upgrade their integrations, and those who wish to continue using fine-tuned old models will have to fine-tune replacements based on the new base GPT-3 models.
OpenAI says it will provide support to users to ensure a smooth transition.

“We will be providing support to users who previously fine-tuned models to make this transition as smooth as possible,” OpenAI wrote.
“In the coming weeks, we will reach out to developers who have recently used these older models, and will provide more information once the new completion models are ready for early testing.”
