As the number of confirmed COVID-19 infection cases rises at an alarming rate, the political parties start to question the government’s strategies to tackle the pandemic. On Sunday, The Peoples Democratic Party issued a statement that was signed by the National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Kola Ologbondiyan in Abuja.

In the statement, the people’s party said, “the manifest incompetence of the Buhari presidency, as well as President Muhammadu Buhari’s lack of visibility and failure to personally lead from the front, is responsible for the failure to check the spread of COVID-19. This comes after the party realized the rate in which the infection and death rate has been increasing in the past week.
The party mentioned that the rates are “alarming” and they could have been curtailed if the nation had a competent, proactive, and transparent leadership with the capacity to articulate a quick national response to the pandemic.
Ologbondiyan added, “The party notes that the situation had been worsened by greed and corrupt All Progressives Congress leaders and the cabal in the Presidency, who are cashing in on President Buhari’s ineffectiveness to pillage resources meant for the fight against COVID-19 pandemic in our country”.
In response, the Buhari Media Organisation claimed that the allegations are not true and further insisted that, “the President is setting transparency standards in the management of the COVID-19 funds that the PDP finds difficult to comprehend”. This was contained in a statement that is signed by its Chairman and Secretary, Niyi Akinsiju, and Cassidy Madueke.

In addition, the PDP mentioned that “it is distressing that since the outbreak of the pandemic in Nigeria, Mr. President had not demonstrated the desired visibility, addressed the nation only thrice (each time, after much prodding), after which he had remained out of public visibility, leading to lack of effective coordination of the fight against the pandemic”.
The rates of infection continue to rise on a daily basis as the country stands at 4399 confirmed cases of infection and 143 confirmed deaths.
