The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that the deregistered political parties in Edo and Ondo State would not partake in the September 19 governorship elections.

The INEC Chief Press Secretary Chairman, Mr Rotimi Oyekanmi declared this at a webinar organized by the International Press Centre (IPC) for journalists in Ondo state.  The webinar was organized to train and advance the skills of journalists in election reporting and other related issues. Previously, it was reported that political parties received an Appeal Court decision withdrawing their deregistration by the INEC.

“The election will go on as scheduled, the judgment can’t change anything. Since none of them (affected parties) conducted primaries before the closing of the window, they cannot take part in the election and that cannot affect INEC’s preparation,” said the chairman of the commission while reacting to a question on if the decision will be carried out.

Moreover, he stated that the INEC would request the verdict, and noting that there were six judgments on the deregistration of political parties and five of them were in favour of the commission. Therefore, no new party will be accommodated since the door of conducting primaries by political parties has closed, confirmed Oyekanmi.

“The judgment of the Appeal court on the reinstatement of the delisted political parties would not affect preparations for the two governorship elections,” he added.
